I’m an illustrator and artist with strong ties to the music scene. I’ve done a lot of gig posters and album covers and I'm getting into illustration for editorial and publishing. I also like to draw comics and have had one of my serial strips published in a monthly magazine.
I was born in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. When I was a kid I really liked watching repeats of the Rocket Robin Hood, Mighty Hercules, and Spiderman cartoons from the 60’s. Commander Mark from TV’s The Secret City was also a crucial early influence. When I was 13 my family moved to Hong Kong where I got really into skateboarding, punk rock, grafitti, and other rebel stuff. After high school I enrolled at the Alberta College of Art where I painted and did printmaking and eventually got into video art. I transferred schools and finished my BFA at the Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design in Vancouver. After graduation I got a job that eventually lead to doing graphics and visual effects for TV and film. Although this seemed like a dream job at first, I grew to hate it and quit after only a few years. I spent a lot of the next phase of my life playing music, making records, and touring North America and Europe. I really liked it but it got kinda harder to do after I got married.
So amidst gallivanting the earth doing windmill strums and scissor-kicks I started to miss making visual art so I picked up a sketchbook and started drawing again. This lead to being handed the reigns on designing posters, t-shirts and album covers for the bands I was in, which in turn lead to other bands and labels requesting the same. Like my taste in music, the work I find myself referencing is vintage 60’s – 70’s. I currently call East Vancouver home, but am living in Brooklyn, NY with my wife and cat Mittens. I’ve been spending time building sets and shapes for fashion editorial and store displays, and still regularly drawing and playing guitar. Sans windmill strums. |
